The stablemaster of sumo grand champion Asashoryu (Tatenami stable) revealed on the 12th that the wrestler, who has been absent from the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament since the second day due to a right thigh injury, plans to attend his retirement bout and the Paris exhibition in June.
Asashoryu injured his right hamstring during his opening-day match against Komusubi Takayasu (Tanokura stable). Although the results of the detailed examination conducted on the 11th are not yet available, the stablemaster explained, “From the images, it appears the muscle is not torn, just a mild strain.”
The grand champion has retirement bouts scheduled for the 30th and 31st after the tournament and a Paris exhibition in June. “I think he will be able to participate,” the stablemaster said, adding that his performance in the grand champion’s ring-entering ceremony also seems fine.
According to the stablemaster, Asashoryu expressed his apologies, saying, “I’m sorry.” The injury is believed to be a pulled muscle in the right thigh.
